Controlled Space was established in Leeds in 2002. The two current directors both have decades of experience in the events and leisure sector, in particular security and crowd management. Steve Johnson worked for a major security company for many years and Sylvia McCann worked in event management then event safety and licensing consultancy before joining Controlled Space. The company was created to fill a gap for a Leeds-based business that could deliver services tailored to meet the specific needs of clients. This is achieved by the hands-on involvement of the directors and management team, extensive pre-planning with clients and careful selection of the right staff for each individual role.

Since it began as a small business, Controlled Space has expanded rapidly as their good reputation grew within the industry. They have always committed a lot of time and energy to maintaining and raising their standard of service which has included investing in a trained and motivated workforce. Much of their new business is a result of existing clients’ recommendations.

Controlled Space provides services to a wide range of clients across all sectors such as arts organisations, charities, local authorities, music promoters, independent venues, event production companies and sporting venues. These include Halifax Piece Hall, the Alhambra Theatre, Brudenell Social Club, the Wardrobe, Bradford City AFC, Wakefield Council, Bradford Literature Festival, the Yorkshire Dales Food and Drink Festival, G Fest and Wakefield LGBT+ Pride to name just a selection.

Their mission statement is “To provide high quality, cost-effective and flexible security solutions and services to a wide range of clients through excellent customer care, delivered by a well-motivated, committed team trained to be professional, firm and fair at all times.” This guides their fundamental approach to the future of the operation.

They first heard about LCVS Enterprises in 2006 from a client who was a tenant at Dock Street at the time Controlled Space were looking for office accommodation. Upon enquiring, they were lucky to find that a small unit was about to become available. They have since been able to move into larger accommodation twice which has been a great help in ensuring minimum disruption whilst allowing them to expand. The fact that the accommodation is very well managed and most services and utilities are provided is a key feature for Controlled Space. And the central location of the premises is a huge benefit as they conduct recruitment interviews and hold client meetings regularly at their HQ
